A word from us

Cotton: the part that decides everything — for babies

Start with what the garment is for: a dressing gown is for the hours either side of sleep: the kettle at seven, the sofa at ten. Cotton is the natural fibre everything else is measured against: it breathes, it takes a hot wash, and it does not hold on to smells the way a synthetic does. That is the difference between a cotton robe and one that only looks the part.

In use it shows up as one thing: it breathes properly — no clamminess after twenty minutes, which is what makes it the sensible choice for a warm bedroom. For more on this, browse our baby dressing gown.

Before you choose

What people notice in the first week

Parents ask about how fast a wriggling baby can be got warm and dry before anything else, and they are right to — it is where most robes fall down. That is also what our kids dressing gown range is for.

 • It takes a hot wash — 60°C when it needs it, without the fabric giving up
 • It stays comfortable against skin all day — the reason it is the default for anyone with sensitive skin
 • A hood on a robe — it keeps wet hair off the shoulders and off the back of the neck, which is the single thing that makes a robe worth keeping on after a bath
 • Ears on the hood — the detail that makes a small child want to put it on, which is half the battle after a bath
The one wash mistake cotton never forgives

Good to know

The one wash mistake cotton never forgives

Cotton creases, and it takes longer to dry than a synthetic. Neither matters much on a dressing gown, but it is worth knowing before you buy. Machine wash at 40°C. Treated that way, a cotton dressing gown lasts five winters rather than one — the difference between a robe you keep on the back of the door and one you replace every autumn.

Frequently asked questions

What size should I take?

Go by age, and size up if you are between two. The robe is cut loose and the belt adjusts, so a size too big is worn for two winters and a size too small is worn for two weeks. The full age and height table is in the size guide above the buy button.

What is it actually made of?

Pure cotton. In the hand it is breathable, soft and honest. In use that means it is it breathes properly.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash at 40°C. Tumble dry low or line dry — it will crease either way, and that is normal.

Will it be too warm indoors?

Cotton breathes, so it very rarely feels stuffy indoors. In a cold house it is a layer rather than a solution.
