One size. This one is cut generously and the belt adjusts, so it works from UK 8 to UK 18 — or, on a child, for the whole of the age range printed on the label.

The case for velour — in a bathrobe

A word from us

The case for velour — in a bathrobe

Start with what the garment is for: a bathrobe earns its place in the ten minutes after a bath, when you want to be dry and warm at the same time. Velour is a knitted pile fabric: short, dense and slightly stretchy. It has the depth of velvet with the give of a jersey, so it moves with you. That is the difference between a velour robe and one that only looks the part.

In use it shows up as one thing: it stretches where a woven fabric pulls — no tightness across the back when you reach for something on a high shelf. There is more of this in our mens velour dressing gown range.

Before you choose

The test it has to pass every evening

Buyers ask about a cut that works whoever picks it off the hook before anything else, and they are right to — it is where most robes fall down. On that note, see also our ultra lightweight travel dressing gown range.

 • A deep, even surface — it catches light like velvet, which is what makes it look more expensive than it is
 • Warm without weight — the pile holds air, the knit keeps it light
 • Belt loops that hold the belt — a small thing, and the first thing missing on a cheap robe
 • It comes back the same from the wash — no shrinking at the cuff and no shape lost at the shoulder
Washing, drying and storing velour — without a tumble dryer

Good to know

Washing, drying and storing velour — without a tumble dryer

Velour marks if you brush the pile the wrong way. It settles as you wear it, but it is worth knowing before the first photograph. Machine wash cool at 30°C, inside out, air dry. Treated that way, a velour bathrobe lasts five winters rather than one — the difference between a robe you keep on the back of the door and one you replace every autumn. In the same vein, have a look at our velour dressing gown womens.

Frequently asked questions

What size should I take?

Take your usual UK size. It is cut loose so it goes over nightwear without pulling, and the belt takes up the rest. If you are between sizes, or if you want to wear it over a jumper, take the larger one. Full measurements are in the size guide above the buy button.

What is it actually made of?

Soft velour. In the hand it is dense, soft and slightly stretchy. In use that means it is it stretches where a woven fabric pulls.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cool at 30°C, inside out, air dry. Do not iron the pile.

Will it be too warm indoors?

Velour is warm without being hot, and the knit means it never feels stiff.
